Satellite photo of Maiao
(Society islands)

Maiao is a small island of the Society Islands (Windward Islands) which counted 300 inhabitants in 2007. On this satellite view, you can see 2 salt lakes, Roto Iti and Roto Rahi as well as the coral reef. Maiao is called "l'icirc;le Interdite" (Prohibited Island), because no foreigner has the right to set foot on it, since an Englishman appropriated the island about 1930. Maiao Island sheltered a cannibal leader, Tamatafetu, who was stoned to death in order of his wife Feito, who had not the same tastes as he in cooking.
