Commonly called Mopelia, Maupihaa is a small atoll (8 km in diameter) in the Leeward Islands (Society Islands) which depends on the village of Maupiti located 160 km to the East. It shelters about fifteen inh., who live on the culture of the pearl oysters and on the copra. In 1917, SMS Seeadler, a German boat ordered by the Count Felix von Luckner beached the atoll. Von Luckner told later this adventure in two novels : the Sea-Devil and the Emperor's Pirates. The copra is got by drying the flesh of the coconut. It is used to make oil and soap.
