Located 17 km northwest of the sister island Tahiti, Moorea is spiked with peaks from 700 to 1200 metres, therefore the presence of clouds on this satellite view. You can see the coral reef which encircles the island, as well as 2 deep bays located in the north : to the left, the bay of Opunohu and to the right the bay of Cook, who discovered the island in 1769 at the same time as Tahiti.
The tahitian name of the island, Mo'orea, means Yellow lizard.
