Part of the commune of Maupiti such as the islands Manuae and Maupihaa, this small atoll of the Society Islands is only populated with marine turtles and sea birds. It was discovered in 1824 by the Russian navigator Otto von Kotzebue, who gave it the name of a famous explorer of the Antarctic, the Russian admiral Bellingshausen. In Tahitian, Motu One means Sand Island.
